An open letter to all young mom

Our children are our pride: we get immense pleasure to witness each development and never tire of talking about their milestones. While pictures and videos keep alive these moments, nothing can really be as vivid as the memories that we moms store away in our hearts. Starting this week, we introduce this new column to you, our readers. Send us a mood picture of your child with a caption of your choice and we will print it here. Let us share the beauty of the lovely moments with each other.

I am not a mother and I will be the first to admit that I really don't possess a maternal bone in my body.

And even though I have never walked in your shoes, I have a deep, abiding respect for what you do. I know how difficult motherhood is and I know that with all its dilemmas and sacrifices, it's also extremely rewarding. It is also extremely important.

You just shape young minds. You are the first interaction children have with other human beings; with life, nurturing, education, values, manners, with love and affection. Therefore, I must ask, what is it with some young mothers these days?

A few days ago, I was in a mall shopping for sundries, but my experience was sullied by a screaming child. Not just the occasional outburst, this was incessant shrieking. The phrase, "plaintive wail" comes to mind. I made my way over the Men's Department to take a peek at this erstwhile junior banshee.

It was a little girl, strapped in the trademark red shopping cart; her older brother frantically kicking at a display of folded T-shirts as the norm, blithely ignoring her obnoxious charges, rifled through a sale bin.

She was either unable to hear the decibels with which her daughter was screaming or willfully chose to ignore the situation. I looked for any obvious sign of discomfort. None that I could see.

Did the child have a disability that was discernible? Again, nothing that I could see. All indications pointed to this being nothing more than a very unruly little girl, undisciplined, unattended and futile demanding attention.

The young mother did nothing to quiet or comfort the child, at least she did nothing during the excruciating 12.7 minutes that I had to spend in the department next to them. The child was loud, annoying and extremely bothersome. I shook my head; another shopper covered his ears. Yet, the young mom seemed oblivious to everything.

Sadly, I have seen this scene repeated many times. So, my question is how could this happen? Why does this happen?

When I was a child, I would have NEVER acted this way and certainly had I, the situation would have been handled efficiently. The fear of my mother's pinch or slap was, as had, if not worse than the actual physical contact. Then there was the fear of the dreaded "you just wait till we get home" spanking.

I cannot say every young mother is guilty of this, but obviously, when a young child is screaming, a basic knowledge of biology and gynecology will tell you that a younger mother is usually part of the equation.

Additionally, I do not know what was coursing through this particular young mother's mind; why she allowed her child to scream without blinking an eye, but from the perspective of my incredibly victimized ears, I would think her completely selfish. She showed an utter lack of consideration for the shoppers around her. I would go one step further and say she showed utter disdain for everyone in the store.

I do not understand this at all. What happened to respect? Is good taste now passe? Has breeding just become another word for procreation? Now, permit me to reiterate that I understand the plight of all you young mothers. You are tired, you are frustrated and probably completely unappreciated for all your efforts, but does that negate appropriate displays of manners, tact and diplomacy?

The reality is this - young children, especially unruly ones, have no business being in public. Parents have no right to foist ill-mannered children on the populace. Sorry, but this is true.

Young, unruly children should not be in nicer restaurants. Young children have no business in theaters, especially during movies not geared for kids. And DO NOT tell me that sometimes children misbehave because they feel bad. I understand this, but if that is in fact the case, why then are they out in public and not at home?

And furthermore, if you have no other recourse than to take your child with you, then you should have the sense to train ...yes, I said TRAIN your children to behave correctly and respectfully in public. If they do not and their behavior is disruptive in any way and you as a parent refuse to handle the situation either by calming or removing them from the premises, then you should be held responsible and fined exorbitantly for disturbing the peace.

Calcium may significantly improve kid's bone health

The new findings show that for those children who have inadequate calcium intake, increasing dietary calcium has a significant impact on bone development.

A study has found that higher intakes of calcium may significantly improve bone health in children. To determine how the intake of dietary calcium affects bone mineral content (BMC) - a marker for bone strength - in children, researchers used an evidence-based approach to assess data from 21 randomized clinical trials with more than 3,800 children.

Statistically pooled data revealed that those kids who had inadequate calcium consumption prior to the start of these studies experienced a substantial increase in their total body BMC that was approximately 25 times greater than children who already consumed adequate amounts of calcium.

Equally important, the study suggests the existence of a calcium threshold for bone health, that is, the level of calcium intake that triggers a significant effect.

"Dairy and other foods that are rich in calcium are thought to be important for the growth and strengthening of bones in children and adolescents," said Michael Huncharek, Director of the Meta-Analysis Research Group and lead author of the study. "In the US, dairy products tend to be the preferred source of calcium since diets that exclude dairy are often deficient in this important nutrient" he added.

Just get name meaning of your baby

Boy or Girl - we people always in the perception that everyone calls them by their unique names that we have given to our baby. Yeah! We people are always looking for a cool and delightful name for a baby boy of girl. But the problem is, we could not get all-exclusive name meaning that has full of potential with its description at one place? Is there any way to get it easily?

Parents, now there is no need to worry about it; because I have found a comprehensive website named "NamesPedia.com". Yeah! It is the source that helps you in the selection of name meaning for your baby boy or girl. This is only one ideal website for all parents and also for all those people who are in search of meanings for names. Just get your expected result with this interactive website.

What's wrong with baby? Yeah! They are crying!

Babies cry. There is no way to avoid it. It can be difficult at first, but you will soon learn to anticipate her needs, and wipe away her tears. Here are the most common reasons baby's cry.

If your little one is wailing, work your way down the list and chances are you will find something that helps.

She is hungry:

Once you learn to recognize the signs that your baby wants to cat - she will fuss, make noises, and root around for your breast if you pick her up - you will get pretty good at feeding her before she starts to really cry. Until then, checking to see if she is hungry is a good first step when your baby cries. Food might not stop her crying right away, but let her keep eating if she wants to. She will stop once her stomach is full.

She needs a fresh diaper:

Some babies let you know right away when they need to be changed. Others do not mind when their diapers are soiled - it's warm and comfortable to them. (Parents are often surprised when they pick up their infant and find she's been sitting in a dirty diaper and never made a sound.) Either way, this one is easy to check and simple to remedy.

She is too cold or hot:

Newborns like to be bundled up and kept warm. (As a rule, they need to be wearing one more layer than you need to be comfortable.) So when your baby feels cold, like when you remove her clothes to change her, she will express her discomfort by crying. You will learn how to quickly change a diaper and wrap your baby back up. Be careful that you do not overdress her, since she is less likely to complain about being too warm than about being too cold and won't cry about it as vigorously.

She wants to be held:

Babies need a lot of cuddling. They like to see their parents' faces, hear their voices, and listen to their heartbeats, and can even detect their unique smell (especially Mom's milk). After being fed, burped, and changed, many babies simply want to be held. You may wonder if you will "spoil" your child by holding her so much, but during the first few months of life that is not possible.

Infants vary a lot in how much they want to be held. Some demand a lot of attention, while others can spend long periods of time sitting calmly by themselves. If your baby likes the attention, pick her up, wear her in a front carrier or sling, or place her next to you.

She cannot take it anymore:

While newborns often thrive on attention, they can easily become overstimulated and have a meltdown. You may find that your baby cries longer than usual after spending a holiday with many adoring family members or has periods at the end of each day when she seems to cry for no reason.

Newborns have difficulty processing all the stimulation they receive - the lights, the noise, being passed from hand to hand - and can become overwhelmed by too much activity. Crying is their way of saying, "I have had enough." This usually happens when your baby is tired. Take her somewhere calm and quiet and let her vent for a while, and then see if you can get her to sleep.

She does not feel good:

If you have just fed your baby and checked that she's comfortable (she can be troubled by something as subtle as a hair wrapped around her toe or a clothing tag that's poking her), but she is still crying, consider checking her temperature to make sure she is not ill. The cry of a sick baby tends to be distinct from the hunger or frustration cry, and you will soon learn when your baby's cries "just don't sound right" and she needs to be taken to the doctor.

None of the above:

Sometimes you might not be able to figure out what is wrong. Many newborns develop periods of fussiness when they are not easily soothed. These fussy periods can range from a few minutes of crying to full-blown colic. Colic is defined as inconsolable crying for at least three hours a day and at least three days a week.

Even if your baby is not crying this much, these episodes may be difficult for you.

Adults too can suffer from Whooping Cough

Pertussis, also known as whooping cough, is not just restricted to childhood, but may infect one at any age. But the risk of a pertussis infection can be greatly reduced by vaccination, as Marion Riffelmann of Krefeld Institute for Infectious Diseases in Germany and her colleagues have found in their study. Their findings have appeared in the current edition of Deutsches Arzteblatt International.

Pertussis is actually one of the classical diseases of childhood, occurring mainly in unvaccinated babies. The clinical course at this age may be severe; pertussis is the most frequent fatal infectious disease in newborns.

Nevertheless, the number of reported attacks of whooping cough in schoolchildren, adolescents and adults has markedly increased in recent years. Roughly 0.2-0.5 percent of adolescents and adults fall ill each year with pertussis and a protracted cough.

About 25 percent of adult patients develop complications, such as seizures, inflammation of the middle ear or circulatory collapse, reports Eurekalert.

Although the standard treatment with antibiotics interrupts the chain of infection, it does not influence the symptoms. Riffelmann said the most effective pertussis prevention is vaccination with a combination vaccine. However, regular boosters are needed, as the vaccination protection continuously decreases after five years.

Baby Products - Money Saving Tips

Before buying Baby Products I think everyone must know and remember the following Money Saving Tips. I am sure that all these may be of great worth to you. Here are some practical strategies for saving money on various products:

Baby bathtub:

Use the kitchen sink, lined with a towel, or carefully bring the baby in the baby bathtub with you.

Baby food:

Prepare your own baby food using a baby-food grinder, an electric blender, or a food processor.

Bibs:

Rather than purchasing a number of terry bibs, buy one or two flexible, molded plastic bibs and wipe clean after every meal.

Changing table:

Install a sturdy wall-to-wall shelf at a comfortable height in baby closet. Or simply plan to change baby on a waterproof pad placed on your bed or on the floor. (Always keep one hand on your baby.)

Child car restraint:

Investigate loaner or rental programs sponsored by hospitals and childbirth education associations. Typically, you'll be able to rent a seat for a refundable deposit and a minimal monthly or flat fee.

Some states administer loaner programs through the state highway safety department.

Clothing storage:

Use brightly colored plastic bins or laundry baskets to hold clean diapers and shirts, or buy used shelves and paint them with nontoxic paint.

Diapers:

Use and recycle cloth diapers. Unfolded diapers allow you to devise the best-fitting shapes for your own baby. They can also be cleaned better.

High Chair:

Feed the baby in your lap, or use a car seat that converts to indoor use.

Infant formula and bottles:

Feed the baby your own milk. It's sterile and warm and requires no preparation.

Infant seat:

Use a car restraint that converts to indoor use. Stroller. Buy a safe used stroller at a yard sale.

T-shirts and nightgowns:

Buy T shirts and nightgowns from a clothing store. Soak them in very hot water with dish washing detergent to get them clean and then wash with regular detergent and a cup of vinegar or bleach, with an additional hot rinse, for maximum whiteness.

We've made a list of those items we think you need and those that can be considered luxuries or unneeded extras. Prices can vary widely among different stores, so shopping around can save money. The easiest way to comparison-shop is by telephone. Make sure you know the specific brands and models of the products about which you are inquiring.

How important the stickers on baby products?

When you shop for baby products, you will find some with stickers that say "CERTIFIED: This model tested by an independent laboratory for compliance with "ABC" safety standard. " Products with these stickers are supposed to have passed certain tests, based on industry "safety" standards.

The stickers, however, have no guarantee of safety. Here is why? Some safety standards require only minimum levels of safe performance, and may not address all hazards; they vary in strictness from one product category to another; and the tests specified in the safety standards generally are conducted on products in their new, unused condition. Except for full sized cribs, the standards for most products do not adequately take into account the normal stresses that could make a product deteriorate with use.

Some product categories, such as full-sized cribs, are tested according to relatively stringent government standards. The two standards were recently used to certify the companies that make or market the cribs, rather than the cribs themselves. At publication time, eight companies were certified (Child Craft; Cosco, Inc.; Evenflo Juvenile Products, Inc.; Nelson Juvenile Products, Inc.; Okla Homer Smith; Simmons Juvenile Products Co., Inc.; Stork Craft LTD.; and Welsh). We believe that a full-sized crib with a current certification sticker is preferable to a crib that lacks the sticker. Cribs without stickers from companies that are currently certified may be less safe because they were produced before standards were set, but cribs from noncertified companies are not necessarily less safe.

Other product categories are certified by the JPMA (individual products are certified, not companies). But, based on our tests, these products, such as walkers and gates, need to be subject to stricter standards. Unfortunately, the consumer does not really know at the point-of-sale which hazards are addressed by the safety standards and which are not.

The absence of a certification sticker does not necessarily mean that the product is unsafe, since manufacturers can choose not to subject their products to certification tests. Hence, a product without a sticker might pass the industry test or it might fail-or the product might never have been tested at all. It should be emphasized that the voluntary ASTM standards address only major hazards, and that only minimum requirements are contained in the standards.

On balance, I think the industry's standard setting and its certification program are a big step in the right direction, but consumers would be better served if there were industry-wide participation and a recognition of normal use and abuse incorporated into all standards.

CPSC projections from survey data indicate that more than 70,000 babies and young children were sent to emergency rooms in 1992 because of injuries related to baby products. So all you are requested to think twice before purchasing baby products.

How safe are baby products?

Past years, there was a boom of Baby Products in USA and parents often assume that because a product is designed for use by babies, it is safe. Old photographs show smiling babies in a crib, carriage, or stroller. Most people do not remember ever getting hurt by these products, nor do they expect their babies to get hurt. Those memories, however, do not reflect reality. As a result of it I now know that an alarmingly high number of injuries are associated with the use of baby products each year.

Nationally, the U.S. government addresses product safety for child car seats through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Baby food and skin care products are regulated by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). It is my opinion that the products administered by these two agencies are well regulated and relatively safe. Cribs and toys, though, are regulated nationally by the CPSC, and applicable standards are not as complete for these products as we think they should be. In fact, cribs and toys are protected by few requirements, although voluntary standards have been created to give children added protection. To be legally sold in the United States, however, cribs and toys must comply with CPSC limited standards. Products that are not in compliance are sometimes recalled by the manufacturer as part of the remedial action asked for by the government and sometimes manufacturers recall products voluntarily.

Some consumer protection also results from voluntary standards set by industry associations, but those standards are only as stringent as the association decides. The Juvenile Products Manufacturers Association (JPMA), for example, sponsors and administers a voluntary certification program for certain juvenile products. Voluntary certification programs are currently in effect for full-sized cribs, high chairs, portable hook-on chairs, playpens, strollers, gates and enclosures, and walkers. The JPMA retains an independent testing laboratory (Detroit Testing Laboratory, Inc.) to perform the tests or witness tests of sample units on a periodic basis. Products are certified if they meet minimum safety performance standards developed by the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM). Although voluntary industry safety standards exist for many baby products, mandatory federal standards, as noted above, cover only child car restraints and cribs.

Yeah! I know, USA is safe about the baby and newborns but what about Indians? Are they???

Kindergarchy : The Rules by Children

Children have gone from background to foreground figures in domestic life, with more and more attention centered on them, their upbringing, their small accomplishments, and their right relationship with parents and grandparents. We are current living in Kindergarchy, under rule by children!

Recently I was driving down a popular street and, as I sat at a red light, I noticed a little scene playing out on the sidewalk in front of a coffee shop. This tableau included a woman, a man and their son, who looked to be about 4 years old. I could not hear the dialogue, but the body language said it all.

The parents stood on either side of the child, tilting toward him in supplication. Arms were extended as pleas were made, but to no avail. They stroked the child’s silky hair, made exaggerated smiley-faces and hopped around with excitement as if to show the child just how wonderful it would be if only, he would consent to doing whatever it was they wanted him to do. The child, on the other hand, was unmoved in the extreme. So much so, in fact, that he vehemently crossed his arms stamped his feet and shook his head NO. The parents’ shoulders sagged in defeat as they exchanged expressions of resigned acceptance across the top of the child’s head.

Request denied. Better luck next time.

As the light changed and I drove away, it occurred to me that what I had just witnessed was less of a family outing and more of a hostage situation.

Just last week, while grocery shopping in our local market, I saw a mom engaged in desperate negotiations with her 5-year-old daughter who could be heard several aisles away lodging loud complaints that she was [gasp!] not having fun.

“Please”, the mom said, “I know you don’t want to be here but Mommy really needs to do the shopping, okay? Is that all right with you? It would be so nice if you would let Mommy finish getting the groceries, OK? Please?”

On second thought, that’s not negotiating. That’s just plain begging.

When did the children take over? Did they sneak into my purse while I was watching “All My Children” and lift the car keys? Did I unknowingly sign over my power of attorney thinking I was ordering a school T-Shirt?

I don’t think I am the only one who’s troubled by the mounting evidence that there’s been a power shift in our society from the grown-ups to the children. In fact, enough people have registered this shift that it now has its own pop-culture handle, as defined by WrodSpy:
Rule or domination by children; the belief that children’s needs and preferences take precedence over those of their parents or other adults.
As much comedic material as this trend generates, though, it also gives one pause.

In my opinion, two of the most important tasks of parenting are to keep one’s children safe and to prepare them to function (and, ideally, flourish) in society once they are ready to transition out of parental care. I think allowing children to adopt the tyrannical viewpoint that their wishes and preferences should dictate the reality of those around them (including parents and other adults) and then handling them the power to enforce that viewpoint by giving up parental boundaries and authority works directly against the successful completion of these two important tasks.

I did some research, hoping to come across a pithy quote that would illustrate this point. This is what I found:

“Don’t handicap your children by making their lives easy.”

I interpret this to mean it is a mistake as well as a disservice to try to smooth out or eliminate every single bump and discomfort life rather than help them learn the skills to navigate the bumps and overcome the discomforts they inevitably will encounter along the way.

Sometimes we don’t get to do what we want. Sometimes we have to be patient. Sometimes we are not the boss. Sometimes it’s not all about us. Sometimes we need to improve ourselves. Sometimes we don’t win. Sometimes we have to suck it up.

These are realities in the world of grown-ups.

If the goal is to raise children who will someday turn into grown-ups who are well-adjusted, resilient and with whom other people actually want to spend time, then we do children no favor when we allow them to slip through childhood without learning these invaluable skills.
